We’re opening our doors to evacuated animals whose owners are staying in non-pet friendly hotels. An estimated 300 pets are currently staying in state appointed hotels throughout New Orleans.
Monday afternoon we loaded more than a dozen animals from various evacuation sites and brought them to our New Orleans campus where they will be cared for until their owners are able to find pet-friendly housing. We are currently working with the State Department to arrange free transportation for pet owners to visit their animals while being housed with the organization.
Although the animals being taken in are owned, we are committed to covering 100% of the cost of their care including food and veterinary care. In the coming days we anticipate to take in about 30 more owned animals from various hotels. If you’re able to help, please consider making a donation to care for these pets in need!
To make room for these owned animals, we are coordinating a series of transports with the help of the ASPCA to move adoptable animals to the SPCA of Tampa Bay. Those animals have safely arrived and will make their adoption debuts soon.
In addition to caring for pets at our facility, we are also assisting those pets still living in hotels. Pet supplies including food, litter, collars and leashes are being delivered to hotels and designated areas daily. A special thank you to Greater Good and Hill’s Pet Nutrition for donating pet supplies and food to aid in these efforts.
Together with the Louisiana State Animal Response Team (LSART) Veterinary Medical Reserve Corps, we are also hosting free vaccine clinics at each pet-friendly hotel. In addition to vaccines, pets will also receive free flea and tick medicine. A special thank you to Dr. Renée Poirrier, Dr. Levy, Dr. Macelroy and Dr. Collins.
Over the last two weeks we have transported more than 250 animals from the Lake Charles area. As one of the only shelters in the area with a 38-foot animal transport trailer, we are acting as a transport hub for shelters around the country stepping up to help with relief efforts.
