Louisiana SPCA Operations

• Both campuses remain closed to the public. We will announce a reopening date shortly.
• Our Community Clinic is open for wellness! Visits are by appointment only. Click here for more information.
• Our Humane Law & Rescue team is actively working to respond to calls of pets in distress but these must be reported to 911 for us to respond.
• We are not accepting owner surrenders at this time and we are unable to board owned pets. For temporary foster options visit 911fosterpets.com.
• If you are with an animal control agency, humane sheltering organization or rescue group and have capacity to receive animals or provide trained/certified responders, please email idalaspca@gmail.com. Please do not self-deploy. 

Report Animal Complaints & Emergencies

• Call 911 to report an animal emergency, 311 for non-emergencies including strays.
• We are addressing animal emergency calls as we receive them. We will setup feed-in-place stations as needed to care for those pets left behind but are confined safely in someone’s yard with access to shelter from the sun. Notices will be placed on all feed-in-place stations to alert remaining neighbors that we are caring for that animal. Do NOT remove animals from these locations!
• Do NOT remove abandoned animals from homes! Call 911 to report it.

As the state assesses the damage for Hurricane Ida, many of our residents might be searching for temporary foster care for their pets until they are able to get back on their feet. 911FosterPets is a resource for families dealing with the aftermath of the storm, linking their pets with temporary foster homes. Doing so prevents these pets from having to enter a shelter and prevents pet owners from having to permanently give up a pet. If you are willing to foster a pet temporarily whose owner may have been displaced or you are looking for temporary foster care for your pet, please sign up through the 911fosterpets.com. We are not able to board owned pets.

Lost & Found Animals

Orleans Parish: The stray-hold period in Orleans Parish is 3 days from the date of intake. After 3 days, the Louisiana SPCA becomes the legal owner and can determine the best placement option for that animal, including adoption and transport.

Plaquemines Parish: The stray-hold period in Plaquemines Parish has been temporarily extended from 5 days to 10 days from the date of intake. Once a stray animal has been held for the 10 day stray-hold period the Louisiana SPCA becomes the legal owner and can determine the best placement option for that animal, including adoption and transport.

If you see your pet on our website, here’s what you should do:

• If you see your pet on our stray animals page call us immediately at 504.368.5191 or email us at info@laspca.org with your contact information and the animal ID to the stray animal on our website that you believe matches your lost pet. We will then schedule an appointment for you to come in to reclaim your pet.

If you’ve lost your pet and don’t see them on our website:

1. Complete a lost report or call us at 504.368.5191 and we can fill it out on you behalf.
2. Post lost pet information on your Nextdoor group and on Lost and Found Facebook groups. It is possible your pet may be at a neighbor’s home being cared for rather than being at the shelter.

If I am not in the area, can I send someone else to retrieve my pet? 

Yes.  We require that you provide a copy of your identification, proof of pet ownership (veterinary records), and a copy of the identification of the person you are authorizing to retrieve your pet on your behalf

What do I need to provide to prove this is my pet?

Vaccination records that are in your possession or you can give us the name of the clinic you use and we can request the records on your behalf.  Clear photos of your pet taken outside of our shelter environment. Adoption contract, intact permit number, other documents establishing ownership  

Will there be any fees?

Orleans Parish: All cats and dogs in Orleans Parish are required to have a current rabies vaccination and license.  If you do not have proof of a rabies vaccination, it will cost $25 for the rabies vaccination and license.  If your dog is intact, you will be given the Intact Permit application and information about spay/neuter services.

Plaquemines Parish: All cats and dogs in Plaquemines Parish are required to have a current rabies vaccination and license.  If you do not have proof of a rabies vaccination, it will cost $25 for the rabies vaccination and license. 

I have evacuated out of state and my home is no longer habitable.  Can you hold my pet until I return?

Unfortunately, we are overwhelmed with stray animals needing immediate assistance.  When we are able to make contact with an owner, we will do everything we can to reunite the pet and its family but are unable to keep pets onsite indefinitely.  We encourage owners who are not able to stay in their homes to find outside support through boarding facilities or foster networks such as 911fosterpets.com

I found my pet but can no longer keep it.  What do I do?

If your pet is currently at one of the Louisiana SPCA campuses, we will contact you to complete our owner surrender paperwork and ask you to share information about your pet to better assist us with placement.  If your pet is not at the Louisiana SPCA, we ask that you schedule a time to surrender your pet when we resume normal operations.
